Austin to Fredericksberg

Having a great day today; the sort I had planned. I'm not rushing to get to a destination to meet a deadline. Perhaps I was rightand the laptop problem I had before I left was an omen after all. Leave it behind plonker!

Leaving Austin was like crossing from one world to another. Oil country to Hill country in 10 miles. The countryside changed to sand blown roads with stunted trees and the first hills to come. By the time I got to Frederickbergit was starting to look like the scenery of wild west movies.

On the way I took a break from the Lyndon Johnson Memorial highway for a brief look at the country park dedicated to him.
Spoke to a very nice old lady who told me that she had the most wonderful experience of her life on a road trip in her motorhome. She was stood on a cliff in Washington State looking down at the crashing ocean below and along the granite cliffs for as far as the eye could see in both directions.
I'm sitting in a bar for lunch as I write this in Frederickberg listening to a country singer singing 'rolling down the highway'. Nice..
For lunch I was served enough food to feed a family of 4. Frederickberg was settled by the Germans (before the invasion of Poland). They should have remembered that turfing off a few half naked indians is so much easier that taking on several million heavilt armed Russians... Anyway the locals are very proud of their german heritage so I'm sitting in Bier Keller halfway to Mexico in 80 degrees of heat. Lunch was a choice of a vast number of german dishes so I had to try TexasSchnitzel... Turned out to be the usual breaded steak but with a topping of Salza, sour cream, cheese and guacamole! Add to this a loaf of bread, a dish of fried potatoes, green beans with bacon and a huge salad and that the family fed for the day. 4 forks please young lady!
The barman recommended my route through the hill country tomorrow so thats sorted. He also suggested I stay in town as its great of an evening. So, I will!
